Top 5 Ways to Enjoy Oysters

Oysters are a beloved seafood treat for millions of Americans. Sweet yet salty at the same time, there’s no denying the flavor of fresh Sewansecott-brand ocean salt oysters. But the best part is, there are many ways to enjoy oysters, from raw to fried and everything in between. Check out these top five ways to prepare your oysters.

1.    Fresh

You can shuck fresh, live oysters at home, then eat them on the half shell with any preferred condiment (lemon juice, cocktail sauce, horseradish, mignonette, etc.). When shucking oysters, protect your hands and don’t forget to wash the outer shell before opening. You will need an oyster knife to sever the top flat side of the oyster from the bottom. Then sever the muscle from the shell, being careful to allow the juice to pool in the shell. Add your condiment, then tilt the wider part of the shell to your lips and slurp the oyster and juices. If you want, you can use a small fork to get the oyster out instead of slurping.

2.     Stewed

In the mood for a nice hearty stew? Check out this recipe for oyster stew, which is a dish comprised of oysters cooked with milk, cream, aromatics, and sherry. Serve with oyster crackers to round out the meal. This is a great dish to have on a chilly late summer night and will be sure to warm you up from the inside.

3.    Fried

If you’re craving fried food, you can prepare fried oyster sandwiches or po’boys. First, shuck the oysters, then bread them and put them in the deep fryer. When done, place on a paper towel to absorb the excess oil, then place them on a halved baguette with hot sauce, pickled slaw, and a remoulade.

4.    Steamed

Another popular way to enjoy oysters is steamed. This is a great option if you don’t like the idea of slurping raw oysters. Steam fresh oysters for three to five minutes to open the shells. Eat as is with some sauce, or put them on a bed of linguini for a robust meal.

5.    Broiled

Oysters Rockefeller are broiled oysters. Top fresh oysters on the half shell with herbs, butter, and breadcrumbs, then bake or broil them briefly. Serve with fresh lemon wedges for taste and garnish.
