Clams are a summer treat that millions of Americans partake in. Their sweet yet salty flavor is a must at barbecues, parties and other events, especially when it comes to fresh Sewansecott-brand ocean salt clams. From chowder to steamed, there are lots of ways to prepare clams. Take a look at the top five.
1. Clams Casino
Clams casino is a classic for a reason. It’s been around for a long time and is a beloved dish of many. You can customize it the way you like with different fillings, such as bacon, bell peppers, breadcrumbs, onions, and clams. Simply boil the clams, open them, then dice them up. Mix the diced clams with the cooked ingredients, then spoon the filling back in the clam shell and broil.
2. Chowder
There are several different types of clam chowders, from New England clam chowder to Cape Cod clam chowder. You may have to experiment with a few different types to find the one you really love. You may find that you prefer a chowder with a creamy base, or perhaps you like one with a tomato base. Or maybe you prefer Hatteras style, a broth-based chowder with redskin potatoes, chopped clams and vegetables.
3. Steamed
Simple is often best, and that’s where steamed clams come in. Enjoy them as-is, or steam them with garlic and lemon. Try a simple recipe of garlic, lemon, butter, and fresh herbs on a bed of linguine.
4. White Clam Pizza
Garlic and clams make for a tasty pizza! Try New Haven-style pizza which is rich and creamy, and does not have red tomato sauce. This white pizza, unlike your traditional pizza topped with marinara and mozzarella, has clams, garlic, oil, oregano, and Pecorino Romano.
5. Linguine With Red Clam Sauce
Choose your favorite pasta marinara for this classic Italian treat. This light and refreshing dish has a briny twist with clams that add a nice texture to the al dente pasta. Try this linguine with red clam sauce recipe.
You will need:
- 12 ounces uncooked linguine
- 2 tsp olive oil
- 2 tsp bottled minced garlic
- 1 jar marinara pasta sauce
- 2 tbsp sun-dried or regular tomato paste
- ¼ tsp crushed red pepper
- 3 cans chopped clams, undrained, or three cups cooked fresh clams
Make pasta according to directions. Heat oil in a saucepan over medium heat, then add garlic and sauté for two minutes. Stir in marinara sauce, red pepper and tomato paste, then bring to a simmer. Drain clams and reserve liquid, then stir that into the marinara-sauce mixture. Simmer for 10 minutes. Stir in clams, then simmer for another three minutes. Serve over pasta with sauce.
